Dear John,
Twice in the last six presidential elections, Republicans won the White House despite losing the national popular vote — all because of the irrational and undemocratic current Electoral College system.
Even more terrifying: It could very well hand the White House to Donald Trump again this year.
But last Wednesday, the Maine state legislature voted to become the 17th state to join the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact, an agreement among the states to award their electoral votes to the winner of the national popular vote. Once the number of electoral votes from the states that have joined the compact reaches 270, we win — and Maine would bring us to 209.
Here’s the problem: The governor of Maine hasn’t said publicly whether she supports the bill or not, and she has ten days to veto the bill, sign it, or allow it to become law without her signature.
We need to make sure the public’s voices are heard. Will you make a donation to help spread the word, get the truth out, and urge Maine Governor Janet Mills to join the effort to end the undemocratic Electoral College system?
As I’ve pointed out before, if it wasn’t for the disastrous and anti-democratic current Electoral College system, George W. Bush would have lost in 2000 and Donald Trump would have lost in 2016.
There never would have been an Iraq War, which killed an estimated 300,000 Iraqi civilians as well as over 4,400 American troops.
The Trump and Bush tax cuts never would have been passed, saving $10 trillion (and counting) — enough to end hunger in America, provide free public college to every working family, provide healthcare to the 25 million Americans still without health insurance, and more.
No Citizens United decision opening the floodgates to unlimited corporate money in politics. No Shelby County case gutting the Voting Rights Act. No Bruen decision gutting state and local gun laws.
Roe v. Wade would still be the law of the land, and we’d be immeasurably farther along in the effort to halt catastrophic global warming.
The National Popular Vote Interstate Compact is our best chance to save our democracy and get rid of the current Electoral College system. But we can’t miss this opportunity to keep the momentum going by making Maine the 17th state to join the compact — and the governor has just ten days to decide whether to sign or veto the national popular vote bill.
Will you make a donation to Inequality Media Civic Action to get out the truth and help end the undemocratic Electoral College system?
Thank you for helping us fight for a democracy that represents us all,
