With MAGA Mike Johnson in control of the House of Representatives, a federal Medicare For All program is out of reach for the foreseeable future.

But that shouldn’t stop a blue state like California from being able to build its own single-payer system. California has already invested in public insulin manufacturing, and has a large enough population and economy that it can make public health care work.

The Affordable Care Act offers waivers for state-based health care innovations. Unfortunately, that waiver doesn’t go far enough—that’s why Rep. Ro Khanna introduced the State-Based Universal Health Care Act, which will open the door to Universal, Simple, and Affordable plans in California and beyond!
