John --
COVID-19 has affected our political reality in so many ways. In many states, our leaders have come together in a bipartisan fashion to help navigate this crisis. Unfortunately, we can’t always say the same about Washington D.C.
The only thing that really hasn’t changed day-to-day in the midst of this crisis is the absurd attacks Republicans are continuing to launch at me, hoping it will damage our re-election campaign. At a time when the American people want to see bipartisan solutions, you’d think they’d take a step back. Wrong. They’re doubling down. The attacks are getting even worse.
Look at what happened this week: Republican Super PAC Congressional Leadership Fund (who spent $158 million to defeat Democrats in swing districts in 2018) accused me of wanting to “release dangerous supermax criminals from prison” during this pandemic.
(You can imagine what kind of TV ads they’ll be running here in October…)
Never mind that the attack is blatantly false and downright offensive… this one was flat out factually dishonest. John, they accused me of personally lobbying to free El Chapo or Ted Kaczynski!
The huge irony here is that I spent more than two years of my life dedicated to getting justice for my son, Jordan. I spent every waking moment of multiple years of my life trying to convict his killer Michael Dunn and put him behind bars for life.
What was even more disappointing to me was that my opponent Karen Handel quickly jumped on board with this fraudulent circus:
I know my opponents read these emails, so this part is specifically for Karen Handel: Please don’t pretend I want to release violent killers from prison when I spent years putting my son’s killer behind bars. It’s insulting, and it’s sad to me that you feel that’s a strategy that will help you win an election in November. The public is expecting leaders like you and me to rise up to the occasion during this crisis, not tear each other down like playground bullies.
Okay, back to addressing everybody, John. I will continue to take the high road and refuse to be distracted by these false and disingenuous attacks from Republicans. I hope you’ll join me in keeping the focus right now on solutions to this crisis -- not trying to score political points.
Thanks for all of your support.
With love,
-- Lucy
COVID-19 has completely changed our campaign and put a much heavier emphasis on digital fundraising. If you could chip in $10 or $20 to emails like this one, we’ll be in much better shape to win this swing district in November thanks to your grassroots support.
