John, it’s Katie Porter.
A few years ago I attended a reception for newly elected Members in DC. A lobbyist came up to me and said “Well, I guess you’re one of the new Members we’ll never see.” I asked him why. He said it was because I didn’t take corporate PAC money.
Since that day, I’ve said clearly—if lobbyists want to meet with me, they better bring their good ideas, not their checkbooks.
As Members of the House, we are one vote of 435. That often means only a fraction of the bills we want to pass will ever become law. But we all have a choice to make when it comes to corporate PAC money. As Members of Congress, we’re privileged to be in positions of power, and we should use our power to stand up to the status quo and corporate special interests.
But unfortunately, this attitude isn’t the norm in Washington. Too many politicians are beholden to corporate PAC and lobbyist money and a system of legalized corruption. Our housing crisis, climate change, and rising prices are a direct result of this system, which puts corporate profits ahead of people.
That’s why I started Truth to Power, an organization dedicated to supporting Democrats who reject corporate PAC money. These candidates can only compete because of grassroots support, and so your donation helps us make all the difference. I hope you’ll consider joining me by giving a $5 contribution to Truth to Power today.
