When Congress returns next week, Speaker Mike Johnson will be fighting for his political life.
After Marjorie Taylor Greene filed a motion to vacate the speakership last month, Mike Johnson reached out to other right-wing members of his caucus in an effort to save his job.
Matt Gaetz (R-FL) told Speaker Johnson that he needs to “put wins on the board for House Republicans.”[1]
From repeated attempts to slash IRS funding to demands for a fiscal commission that is nothing more than a “cuts commission” without any new tax revenue from the rich and corporations, House Republican wins reflect nothing more than a give-away to millionaires, billionaires, and large profitable corporations.
Write to Congress right now and tell them to reject regressive tax policies that let the wealthy and big corporations off the hook. Instead, we need a tax code that invests in our future, paid for by making millionaires, billionaires, and corporations pay their fair share in taxes.

As soon as Congress passed a bipartisan budget agreement to avert a government shutdown, the MAGA wing of the Republican Party took action.
Marjorie Taylor Greene filed a motion to vacate the speakership, putting Speaker Mike Johnson on the defensive. But instead of defending the bipartisan budget agreement, Speaker Johnson held court with other extremist members of his party.
Right-wing Representative Matt Gaetz (R-FL) told CNN:[1]
“I gave the speaker some unsolicited advice. That we’ve got to get into a fighting posture. And I was very pleased with how the speaker received that advice. The speaker wants to put wins on the board for House Republicans, and we better start doing that.”
Just during this session of Congress, House Republicans have introduced a fiscal commission, which Speaker Johnson says will not seek any new revenues from the rich and corporations, instead seeking to cut critical programs and services such as Medicaid, SNAP nutrition benefits, and housing vouchers for working families.[2]
They’ve argued for abolishing the federal tax code in favor of a regressive 30% national sales tax, which would dramatically cut taxes on the rich while making working families pay way more out of pocket. If you thought food prices were high now, just wait!
They’ve worked consistently to slash funding for the IRS, taking away the agency’s ability to implement the new, free Direct File tax filing program and stop audits and tax enforcement of the wealthy and major corporations.
When Matt Gaetz talks about Republican “wins” you better bet any and all of these proposals are on the table.
Write to your members of Congress now and demand they reject regressive tax policies that further enrich the wealthy while starving critical programs and services of the resources we need.
Together, we have fought back against right-wing tax policies and won. But with the speaker’s back against the wall, fighting for his political life, he may be willing to do just about anything to retain his speakership.
Instead of regressive tax policies that protect the bank accounts of their millionaire and billionaire donors, we’re demanding Congress act to make the wealthy pay their fair share including passing a 25% tax on the wealth gains of billionaires and ultra-millionaires, and defending IRS funding so the agency can better serve everyday taxpayers and crack down on wealthy and corporate tax cheats.
Write to your senators and representative right now and tell Congress to reject regressive tax policies and instead fight for a tax code that puts working people first.
