John,

April is Autism Acceptance Month. I've had the opportunity to meet and know those living with autism as well as their family members who often serve as advocates to ensure their loved ones are seen, heard, understood, respected, and accepted.

Formerly observed as Autism Awareness Month, those across the autism spectrum still experience barriers to health care and other social supports to live fulfilling lives with dignity. Increasing public awareness is the beginning of addressing these barriers; recognizing those across the spectrum with their strengths and differences and challenges is essential for their acceptance and the work to attain their inclusion among us.

Because many across the spectrum go unnoticed as the manifestation of their autism is a quiet disability, my friend and social enterprise leader Maeve in Belfast, Northern Ireland introduced the JAM Card to facilitate communications and interactions that those on the autism spectrum experience. It is taking hold by storm globally, and I hope it can be deployed here in California and across the United States for those who need just a minute.

This month of April, this month of acceptance, let us each embrace those who have the courage to ask for just a minute.

Sincerely,

Betty
