Gov. Justice declares State of Emergency for 11 counties because of severe thunderstorms, flooding, high winds

Gov. Justice announced a State of Emergency in 11 counties this week due to severe thunderstorms, winds up to 130 mph, flooding, fallen trees, power outages, and obstructed roads.

The original announcement ([link removed]) on Tuesday consisted of Fayette, Kanawha, Lincoln, and Nicholas counties.

However, on Thursday, after rain continued to raise parts of the Ohio River to extreme levels, Gov. Justice later amended the same declaration ([link removed]) to include Barbour, Brooke, Hancock, Marshall, Ohio, Wetzel, and Wood counties because of ongoing threats.

The State of Emergency declaration is a proactive measure ensuring the allocation of necessary resources and expediting emergency response efforts. It allows state and local agencies to take swift and decisive actions to mitigate the impact of dangers in an effort to protect the lives and property of West Virginians.

Gov. Justice also issued a State of Preparedness ([link removed]) for all 55 counties on Tuesday, which is still in effect.

The West Virginia Emergency Management Division (WVEMD) encourages everyone affected by the storms to fill out this survey ([link removed]) so that emergency management officials have a better understanding of how severe weather impacted your community.

Gov. Justice announced ([link removed]) plans for the installation of eight new murals in the historic West Virginia State Capitol Rotunda.

These beautiful artworks, which will depict iconic state scenes and landmarks, are set to be installed between April and November of this year.

"Our State Capitol is already one of the most stunning in the nation, and the addition of these murals will only add to its beauty," Gov Justice said. "This is something that's been talked about since the Capitol's completion in 1932, and here we are nearly 100 years later, finally, getting this project across the finish line. I cannot wait for these to be finished."

Gov. Justice announces Water Development Authority approves over $38 million in economic enhancement projects

Gov. Justice announced ([link removed]) the West Virginia Water Development Authority (WDA) has approved 18 new Economic Enhancement Grant Fund (EEGF) projects worth $38,171,352.00.

In April 2022, Gov. Justice called a special session ([link removed]) to fund the Economic Enhancement Grant Fund ([link removed]) , at the time securing an initial amount of $250 million.

Since then, the program has seen exceptional success, and the WDA has approved EEGF projects worth $427 million, which has resulted in $1.8 billion of projects getting across the finish line. Over 605,000 West Virginians have been affected by these projects, which have touched every corner of the state.

Gov. Justice announces FY 2024 revenue collections $522.9 million ahead of estimate through March
[link removed]
Gov. Justice announced ([link removed]) that West Virginia’s General Revenue collections for March 2024, the ninth month of Fiscal Year 2024, came in at $487.4 million, which is $94.8 million above the official estimate. Cumulative collections for Fiscal Year 2024 of more than $4.068 billion stand at $522.9 million ahead of the cumulative estimate.

"West Virginia's fiscal resilience continues to shine with March’s incredible revenue surplus,” Gov. Justice said. “With our cumulative collections now standing at $522 million ahead of estimates with three months remaining in the fiscal year, West Virginia is well-positioned for a strong finish despite the small monthly downtick in February.

“My commitment to responsible financial management and wise use of our surplus dollars remains unwavering, because we’ve shown time and time again that when we put West Virginians first, and prioritize their needs and wants, it propels our rocket ship higher and farther. As we continue to climb, I will keep steering the ship with care, ensuring that every move boosts us towards a future where all West Virginians can reach for the stars.”
