Friends and Neighbors,

?

I hope you had a happy Easter! Hopefully, you were able to spend some time with your loved ones and celebrate. At the Legislature we just wrapped up our ?spring break,? which means that a number of omnibus bills and other policy proposals will be moving out of committee and onto the House Floor. It isn?t just policy, there will be money spent as well, even as we face a looming deficit. I wanted to take the time this week to update you on several important proposals: the House Republicans? solution to the Uber/Lyft crisis, a bill to turn our Legislature into a full-time legislature, and my bill to fund improvements in water infrastructure for the East Bethel and Ceder Creek Elementary Schools.

First, the House Republican remains dedicated to finding a way to save Uber and Lyft and allow them to continue operating in the Twin Cities and surrounding metro area. Yesterday we held a press conference [ [link removed] ] and discussed our solution in detail, I encourage you to watch it! Our fix is very simple ? it?s a four-line bill that simply states that Minneapolis does not have the authority to regulate Uber/Lyft out of the state. The bill, HF 5006 [ [link removed] ],? was introduced by my colleague Rep. Elliott Engen and I sincerely hope that we?re able to get this done for Minnesotans, especially those who rely on these ridesharing companies to access essential services.

We believe in our fix so wholeheartedly that we even attempted to declare an urgency on the House Floor Friday night to immediately take the bill up for consideration. To be clear, we gave the majority the opportunity to immediately fix this situation and allow Uber/Lyft to continue operating, and it was voted down on a party-line vote. I was disappointed by this result yesterday, but I remain optimistic that we?ll be able to provide a solution by the end of session.

Also, this week, a bill to enact a full-time legislature was presented by Majority Leader Long in the State Government Committee. I oppose this bill because I don?t believe that the state government needs any more time to spend your money. Last year, in just five months, the majority started with a record-breaking surplus and spent us into a looming deficit while they grew government by 40%. As explained by my colleague Rep. Nash here [ [link removed] ], if you give a mouse a cookie, then he?ll want a glass of milk? there?s no doubt that politicians would get carried away if we were in session twice as long as we are now.

I also introduced HF 5189 [ [link removed] ] this week which is a bill that would invest over $10 million into our community. Specifically, it allocates $10,500,000 to connect East Bethel and Cedar Creek Elementary Schools to the city?s water and sewer systems. This is a proposal that has been requested by local leaders and stakeholders and, if passed, would greatly increase the water quality in both schools.

I was proud to take this opportunity to advocate for our community at the Capitol and while this bill has not yet been granted a hearing, I have requested one and hope to get this done this session.

Finally, I wanted to make you aware that the Lessard-Sams Outdoor Heritage Council released its FY25 Call for Funding Requests [ [link removed] ]. An estimated $150+ million will be available for habitat work, and I encourage any groups that protect, restore, and enhance habitat for fish, game, and wildlife to apply for a grant.
