Why there's a long-standing voter registration gap for Latinos

"In a pivotal election year, U.S. democracy continues to face a persistent challenge among the country's electorate — gaps in voter registration rates between white eligible voters and eligible voters of color."]

John, we have a problem — but Voto Latino has the solution.

Our problem: there is a long-standing voter registration gap for Latinos in America. NPR recently outlined the reasons behind it:

The economic needs of the Latino community sometimes overshadow political participation. Political engagement can be hard to prioritize for some members of our community who hold lower-wage jobs. This is not out of disinterest for politics, but because it can be harder to take time off to vote for those who are paid hourly.

Political campaigns are less likely to reach out to Latino voters. Campaigns tend to see our community as “low-propensity voters” and feel as though investing resources into reaching Latino voters should not be a priority outside of campaign years.

Voting restrictions can disproportionately affect people of color. NPR found that Latinos were twice as likely as white voters to not have a government-issued photo ID — which can be an issue in states with strict voter ID requirements.

Our solution: Voto Latino has proven time and time again that we are experts at registering young Latino voters and mobilizing them to cast a ballot across the country.

We're pros at registering young voters. In 2020, the number of Latinos we registered in Georgia and Arizona exceeded Biden’s margin of victory.

The Latinos that we register to vote actually show up. We registered 600k+ Latino voters nationwide, and 82% turned out to vote!

We are committed to keeping Latinos politically engaged. We're constantly working on the ground to keep Latinos informed and uplift the voices of our community -- regardless of if there is an election coming up.
