John, North Carolina’s legislative session starts in just a few weeks – and with it, we’re anticipating a renewed effort to pass Article V in the state.
Several Article V bills passed the North Carolina House last year, and those bills are eligible for consideration this year – meaning they just have to pass the Senate before going into effect. And our sources on the ground have confirmed the extremist forces behind Article V are already building support in the state’s Senate to get this bill across the finish line.
This news came as we’re already fighting 63 bills in states across the country calling for an Article V Convention – bringing us ever closer to utter Constitutional Chaos. This well-funded far-right scheme will require a powerful multi-state response, the sort that only Common Cause is able to deliver – but we can’t do this without your help.
You might have already seen my messages on the dangers of Article V, but in case you haven’t, here’s a quick recap:
The Article V Convention is a secretive plot funded by millions in right-wing dark money from the likes of the Kochs and Mercers.
Their endgame? Give megadonors and corporations free rein to radically reshape our Constitution against the will of the people – writing far-right policy goals directly into our Constitution, while gutting rights like free speech, the right to protest, and our right to privacy.
The conspirators behind Article V already have plans to pass calls for a Convention in the last states they need to succeed. Common Cause won’t let them win – but we need to pull out all the stops to prevent North Carolina – and every other state considering an Article V bill – from calling this dangerous Convention.
I know this all sounds overwhelming, John, but here’s the good news: Common Cause has a proven track record in rolling back and stopping Article V calls – protecting the rights you and I care about.
Just last year, members like you stopped Montana’s Article V bill by just one vote! And before that, we rescinded calls for an Article V Convention in New Jersey, Illinois, Colorado, New Hampshire, Delaware, New Mexico, Maryland, and Nevada – in addition to stopping nearly 150 new calls for a convention each year in states across the country.
But we can’t continue this fight without you, John. We’re already spread thin fighting each and every Article V bill – and our opponents are spreading their scheme to new states. With only 6 states standing between us and total chaos, we can't afford to lose any ground.
