Dear John,
Today, I want to share something special with you – a personal message from Lord Michael Heseltine, President of European Movement UK and a key figure in the anti-Brexit movement.
His thoughts resonate deeply with me and are a good reminder of the need to focus on what we can do now to build a better future for ourselves and future generations.
It is a common misconception that civil society campaigning is a zero-sum game, where one organisation's gain must inevitably be another's loss. I don't subscribe to that view at all. Under my leadership, Open Britain has prioritised collaboration with organisations that share our broad objectives. European Movement. Fair Vote UK. Electoral Reform Society. Liberty. Unlock Democracy. 99%. Save British Farming. And many, many more. It has always been mutually beneficial.
Open Britain and European Movement share a long history. We stood shoulder-to-shoulder in the fight against Brexit and in the campaign to secure a People's Vote. These days, circumstances dictate that we focus on different elements of the same essential problem. European Movement, on charting the route back to EU membership. Open Britain, on ensuring that our democracy functions properly when questions about our relationship with the EU are asked in future. (There can be no repeat of 2016, when our democracy was hijacked by the charlatans responsible for the mess our country is in now.)
As each organisation pursues its own priorities, it is important not to lose sight of what the other is doing. With that in mind, I invite you to read Lord Heseltine's personal message and to follow his suggestion to sign-up to receive European Movement's newsletters using the link below (if you are not already subscribed).
