Welcome to the first port on our round-the-world tour of ocean sanctuaries: the Galápagos Islands!

 

I’ve seen more wildlife in a month in the Galápagos than I could in a year of being at sea: baby hammerhead sharks swimming in remote bays, bottlenose dolphins congregating around oceanic seamounts, manta rays (the size of my cabin!) leaping from the waves, and sea turtles swimming below us… which shows you the urgent need for stronger ocean protection!

STUDYING EXTRAORDINARY CREATURES

 

Our ship, the Arctic Sunrise, is on a six week expedition to showcase one of the best examples of strong marine protection inside the Galápagos Marine Reserve, and contrast this to the lack of protection just outside of it. The evidence we gather will help us make a case for governments to create a network of ocean sanctuaries across the globe, to protect at least 30% of the world’s oceans by 2030.

We’ve been busy helping local scientists survey marine habitats and track migratory species using BRUVS (Baited Remote Underwater Video Systems), as well as gather research through eDNA testing. This involves taking water samples at key locations and analysing it to find traces of genetic material that creatures leave behind as they swim through. It helps us compare the biodiversity inside and outside the marine reserve, to help make the case for a vast new ocean sanctuary in the Eastern Tropical Pacific Ocean.

It’s a unique privilege to assist local scientists with work that will lead to more areas being protected – providing our politicians act to sign the Global Oceans treaty into law. Ocean sanctuaries will give sharks, whales, rays, turtles and other marine life a network of safe spaces, free from the threats of industrial fishing and deep sea mining, ensuring ocean life will thrive for generations to come!
