WORKING TO PROTECT ACCESS TO AFFORDABLE INTERNET SERVICES

Oregon has over 200,000 households that rely on the Affordable Connectivity Program for high-speed internet access. I'm working in a bipartisan manner, including with my colleagues on the Problem Solvers Caucus, to prevent this critical program from expiring at the end of the month.

This week, the caucus officially endorsed the Affordable Connectivity Program Extension Act, which I’m proud to cosponsor. Established in January 2022, the Affordable Connectivity Program has connected over 23 million U.S. households – more than one in six – with access to high-speed, reliable internet. Internet access has become a necessity for online classes, telehealth, and more. That’s why I’ll continue working to protect and expand broadband access.

MY LATEST COLUMN: THE IMPORTANCE OF IMPROVING CHILD CARE ACCESSIBILITY AND AFFORDABILITY

The Economic Policy Institute reports that the cost of care for one infant takes up 22 percent of an average Oregon family’s income. That number soars to nearly 40 percent for a family of four. These are more than just statistics. Unaffordable child care is a harsh reality for many parents that has significant, far-reaching consequences in our communities.

In a recent survey of Oregon parents, over 40 percent responded that they had to change career plans because they couldn’t find child care. Labor shortages are already making day-to-day operations difficult for many businesses, and the problem is only exacerbated by parents having to stay at home due to soaring child care costs. In addition to adverse workforce impacts, child care roadblocks lead to educational concerns. Children end up with less exposure to social interactions and early learning opportunities. Parents decide against pursuing higher education, which could lead to a less skilled workforce.

As a mom, I have empathy for parents concerned about finding affordable and high-quality care for their children. We all want what’s best for our kids, but moms and dads shouldn’t have to choose between staying at home full-time and working or going to school. I’m dedicated to reaching across the aisle and working on policies to address this issue.

SUPPORTING STUDENT SUCCESS IN HIGHER EDUCATION

I recently joined several of my colleagues to introduce the bipartisan and bicameral Postsecondary Student Success Act. Our proposal would permanently reauthorize the Postsecondary Student Success Grant program, which helps remove barriers that stand in the way of students’ academic success.

Over the past two decades, there has been a significant increase in high school graduation and college enrollment rates, reflecting a concerted effort to expand access to higher education. However, despite these strides, a significant number of students who embark on their college journey, whether at two-year or four-year institutions, falter before completing their degrees. Currently, only 62 percent of college enrollees nationwide successfully achieve their educational aspirations.

I was the first person in my family to graduate college, and I recognize the importance of supporting methods that are proven to help new students succeed. That’s why I’m proud to lead this evidence-based proposal.

PUSHING FOR LEGISLATION TO SECURE OUR BORDER, SUPPORT ALLIES

With our border in crisis and our allies facing existential threats, American families are demanding Congress act to defend our national security. We have to make a move, and that’s why I’m co-leading a bipartisan package to secure our border and support our allies.
