Legislative Update
Democrats continue to push for full-time legislature.?
Democrats are pushing for the passage of HF 4598, a bill poised to enact ridiculous changes to the functioning of state government. At its core, this legislation proposes the establishment of an independent redistricting commission and an applicant review panel, prohibits legislative members from becoming lobbyists, and create new requirements for convening and conduct for regular legislative sessions.
The aspirational and misguided HF 4598 introduces new requirements governing the convening and conduct of regular legislative sessions. Most notably, it includes a provision to eliminate the constitutional limit of 120 legislative days, which sets up the Democrats want of a full-time legislative session. The concept of a full-time legislature is quite frankly a terrifying thought, as Minnesotan?s wallets will be in constant danger. This push by Democrats reflects a reckless spending agenda as HF 4598 represents yet another avenue for Democrats to indulge in unchecked expenditure, further exacerbating the financial strain for Minnesotans.
I compared this horrible idea to the book ?If you give a mouse a cookie? - it sets a precedent for endless demands for more. Democrats have already spent a $17.5M surplus and created a new $10B in taxes, we have increased the biennial budget by $20B which is an unreasonable amount given the incredibly large surplus they had access to. Just this past February the Walz administration warned about an impending structural deficit which came with a warning not to spend recklessly. Gov. Walz proposed a $250M supplemental budget, which the majority then doubled as they apparently have somehow found more unnecessary things in state government. If Democrats get a full-time legislature, if we give the mouse a cookie, it will be one thing after another that they want to waste money on.
