Rep. Troy E. Nehls Speaks with Matagorda County's Youth Leadership Program Greetings! I wanted to take a moment to share with you a recap on what happened last week in Texas' 22nd District and the United States House of Representatives. This Week in TX-22 Rep. Troy E. Nehls Presents Purple Heart to Korean War Veteran's Son This week, I had the honor to present Mr. Charles Bowman of Richmond, Texas, with the Purple Heart that was awarded to his father, Sergeant First Class (SFC) Richard H. Bowman. SFC Richard Bowman served in Korea from July 2, 1950, to June 1, 1951. He was wounded during the Korean War, and at the time, he was a Private First Class (PFC) assigned to Company I, 34th Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division. He was awarded the Purple Heart on October 4, 1951, and was given the certificate, but never received the medal. Through the work done by my office, I was finally able to present it to his son. Additionally, Charles was given his father’s Combat Infantry Badge, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, and his father’s corrected DD Form 215. God bless our nation's servicemembers and Veterans. Rep. Troy E. Nehls Visits Cushing, Oklahoma Cushing, Oklahoma, is known as the "Pipelines Crossroads of the World." Crude oil from the Permian Basin, Gulf Coast, and Canada is transported to Cushing to be blended, stored, and sent elsewhere to refineries across the country to be used by oil and gas companies. Companies such as Plains All American utilize breakout tanks to store and create certain blends of oil for their customers, which include companies like Phillips 66 and ExxonMobil. Roughly 100 million barrels of oil are stored in Cushing, OK, alone. I traveled there this week to see the impact of the bipartisan Promoting Innovation in Pipeline Efficiency and Safety (PIPES) Act of 2023, which the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee approved in December 2023. Included in the PIPES Act is an initiative that would allow operators to base the inspection frequency of in-service breakout tanks on risk modeling instead of outdated mandates. This would ensure that inspections are not being conducted unnecessarily while keeping safety front of mind. During the trip, I was able to see the inside of a breakout tank, see the command-and-control center, and was given a presentation by the Plains All American Terminal Operator regarding the day-to-day operations of their terminal facility. I also saw firsthand the various procedures Plains All American takes to mitigate risks and ensure safe operations of in-service breakout tanks and their pipeline system, which consists of 18,300 miles worth of pipe and gathering systems in the United States and Canada. The oil and gas workers in the 22nd Congressional District of Texas rely on the safe, efficient movement of oil to ensure our refineries on the Gulf Coast have the resources to power our economy. Nehls Speaks with Matagorda County's Youth Leadership Program I had the pleasure of meeting with Matagorda County's Youth Program, where I discussed my role in Congress and our nation's federal deficit. Additionally, I discussed two pieces of legislation that I have introduced in the 118th Congress, including the Let Experienced Pilots Fly Act, which would allow pilots to continue operations until they reach the age of 67, and the bipartisan Trucker Bathroom Access Act, which would ensure truckers access to bathroom facilities while they are on the road delivering or picking up cargo across the United States. I encouraged this exemplary group of students to participate in the important 2024 election and have their voices heard. Thank you for having me! Rep. Troy E. Nehls Joins Wharton County Community Leader Roundtable This week, I joined a roundtable discussion, which was hosted by the Wharton Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture, with Wharton County community leaders. During the roundtable, we discussed trade schooling opportunities, including a new trucker training program and my legislation, the Trucker Bathroom Access Act. It's always great being able to meet with the great folks in TX-22. Update for 2024 Congressional Art Competition The submission deadline for the Congressional Art Competition is now Tuesday, April 30, 2024. Submissions can be made online through my website. The Congressional Art Competition began in 1982 to provide an opportunity for members of Congress to encourage and recognize the artistic talents of their young constituents. Since then, over 650,000 high school students have participated in the nationwide competition. The Congressional Art Competition is sponsored by the Members of the U.S. House of Representatives and is open to all high school students in the 22nd Congressional District of Texas. The winning artwork of our district's competition will be displayed for one year in the U.S. Capitol, and receive two plane tickets to Washington, D.C. The second-place winner will receive a certificate and a United States flag, and the third-place winner will receive a challenge coin. Available IRS Tools to Help Taxpayers Through Tax Filing Season The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) recommends trying the following self-help resources available to taxpayers 24/7 for a smooth and easy tax filing experience. IRS.gov offers a variety of online tools to help taxpayers answer common tax questions. For example, taxpayers can search the Interactive Tax Assistant, Tax Topics and Frequently Asked Questions to find answers. IRS Free File provides eligible taxpayers who want to prepare their own returns free tax preparation and the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) or Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) programs offers free tax help from certified volunteers at thousands of sites across the country. The IRS provides a checklist to help taxpayers as they prepare to file their 2023 tax returns, which can be found HERE.
