Lidl is no longer advertising on a Serbian TV channel found spreading Russi=
an propaganda =E2=80=94 though the grocery chain says it=E2=80=99s not a po=

The European company=E2=80=99s ad halt comes as researchers and nonprofits,=
including Check My Ads, have been sounding the alarm about advertisers unk=
nowingly funding the spread of propaganda.=20
Happy TV was one of two Serbian commercial TV channels with national broadc=
asting licenses that =E2=80=9Cstand out=E2=80=9D when it comes to =E2=80=9C=
manipulating information and spreading Russian war propaganda,=E2=80=9D Ser=
bia=E2=80=99s Center for Research, Transparency and Accountability found.=

The CRTA=E2=80=99s research was also cited in a post from Reporters Without=
Borders calling attention to the problem of =E2=80=9Cunreliable news media=
content in Serbia,=E2=80=9D which also named Happy TV as a primary culprit=

While the organization=E2=80=99s researchers think it=E2=80=99s premature t=
o =E2=80=9Cdraw definitive conclusions about Lidl=E2=80=99s motivations=E2=
=80=9D for the change, =E2=80=9Cwe are hopeful that Lidl's decision stems f=
rom a recognition of [Happy TV=E2=80=99s] role in disseminating disinformat=
ion and non-professional, unethical, and biased reporting,=E2=80=9D Program=

In an email, Lidl confirmed to Check My Ads that it =E2=80=9Cdecided to sto=
p advertising on the channel Happy TV since the beginning of 2024.=E2=80=9D=
But the company said its decision was about properly informing its custome=
rs about its products, not taking a political stance.=20
Unknowingly funding propaganda in the Balkans isn=E2=80=99t a new problem f=
or advertisers, or even Lidl. An earlier May 2023 CRTA report detailed how =
companies =E2=80=94 including Lidl =E2=80=94 propped up disinformation with=
ad dollars.=20
=E2=80=9CProcter and Gamble, and Coca Cola, and Lidl, are very likely not a=
ware that they are on these pro-Russian disinformation channels,=E2=80=9D C=
heck My Ads CEO Claire Atkin told the European Parliament about the report=
=E2=80=99s findings.=20

As Happy TV continues to appear on televisions across Serbia, CRTA says it =
will watch for advertisers showing up in unsavory places, funding dark corn=
ers of the media world in the process.=20
=E2=80=9CWe continue to monitor the advertising decisions of major brands c=
losely, including Lidl, and aim to influence other significant advertisers,=
such as Dutch retailer Dehleize and multinational Coca-Cola or P&G, to exe=
rcise greater caution and responsibility in their advertising placements,=
=E2=80=9D Nedelijkov said.=20
=E2=80=9COur goal is to encourage these corporations to consider the broade=
r implications of their financial support, particularly in terms of legitim=
izing platforms known for disseminating disinformation alongside their adve=

hit $1 trillion this year =E2=80=94 a reality that makes transparency in t=
he advertising ecosystem more important than ever.=20
The industry, as it stands now, is opaque with almost no oversight and regu=
lation. In fact, when the Incorporated Society of British Advertisers studi=
ed the supply chain for programmatic advertising =E2=80=94 which is how mos=
t ads are bought and sold nowadays =E2=80=94 it couldn=E2=80=99t track wher=
e 3% of the money ended up.

Lidl is no longer advertising on a Serbian TV channel found spreading Russian propaganda â though the grocery chain says itâs not a political decision.
The European companyâs ad halt comes as researchers and nonprofits, including Check My Ads, have been sounding the alarm about advertisers unknowingly funding the spread of propaganda.
Happy TV was one of two Serbian commercial TV channels with national broadcasting licenses that âstand outâ when it comes to âmanipulating information and spreading Russian war propaganda,â Serbiaâs Center for Research, Transparency and Accountability found.
The CRTAâs research was also cited in a post from Reporters Without Borders calling attention to the problem of âunreliable news media content in Serbia,â which also named Happy TV as a primary culprit.
While the organizationâs researchers think itâs premature to âdraw definitive conclusions about Lidlâs motivationsâ for the change, âwe are hopeful that Lidl's decision stems from a recognition of [Happy TVâs] role in disseminating disinformation and non-professional, unethical, and biased reporting,â Program Director RaĹĄa Nedeljkov told Check My Ads.
In an email, Lidl confirmed to Check My Ads that it âdecided to stop advertising on the channel Happy TV since the beginning of 2024.â But the company said its decision was about properly informing its customers about its products, not taking a political stance.
Unknowingly funding propaganda in the Balkans isnât a new problem for advertisers, or even Lidl. An earlier May 2023 CRTA report detailed how companies â including Lidl â propped up disinformation with ad dollars.
âProcter and Gamble, and Coca Cola, and Lidl, are very likely not aware that they are on these pro-Russian disinformation channels,â Check My Ads CEO Claire Atkin told the European Parliament about the reportâs findings.

As Happy TV continues to appear on televisions across Serbia, CRTA says it will watch for advertisers showing up in unsavory places, funding dark corners of the media world in the process.
âWe continue to monitor the advertising decisions of major brands closely, including Lidl, and aim to influence other significant advertisers, such as Dutch retailer Dehleize and multinational Coca-Cola or P&G, to exercise greater caution and responsibility in their advertising placements,â Nedelijkov said.
âOur goal is to encourage these corporations to consider the broader implications of their financial support, particularly in terms of legitimizing platforms known for disseminating disinformation alongside their advertisements.â
CRTAâs efforts come as ad spending around the world is projected to hit $1 trillion this year â a reality that makes transparency in the advertising ecosystem more important than ever.
The industry, as it stands now, is opaque with almost no oversight and regulation. In fact, when the Incorporated Society of British Advertisers studied the supply chain for programmatic advertising â which is how most ads are bought and sold nowadays â it couldnât track where 3% of the money ended up.
Advertisers need to know where their money is going. Itâs that simple.

Grocery store Lidl stops putting ads on Serbian TV channel found spreading Russian propaganda

Lidl is no longer advertising on a Serbian TV channel found spreading Russian propaganda â though the grocery chain says itâs not a political decision.
The European companyâs ad halt comes as researchers and nonprofits, including Check My Ads, have been sounding the alarm about advertisers unknowingly funding the spread of propaganda.
Happy TV was one of two Serbian commercial TV channels with national broadcasting licenses that âstand outâ when it comes to âmanipulating information and spreading Russian war propaganda,â Serbiaâs Center for Research, Transparency and Accountability found.
The CRTAâs research was also cited in a post from Reporters Without Borders calling attention to the problem of âunreliable news media content in Serbia,â which also named Happy TV as a primary culprit.
While the organizationâs researchers think itâs premature to âdraw definitive conclusions about Lidlâs motivationsâ for the change, âwe are hopeful that Lidl's decision stems from a recognition of [Happy TVâs] role in disseminating disinformation and non-professional, unethical, and biased reporting,â Program Director RaĹĄa Nedeljkov told Check My Ads.
In an email, Lidl confirmed to Check My Ads that it âdecided to stop advertising on the channel Happy TV since the beginning of 2024.â But the company said its decision was about properly informing its customers about its products, not taking a political stance.
Unknowingly funding propaganda in the Balkans isnât a new problem for advertisers, or even Lidl. An earlier May 2023 CRTA report detailed how companies â including Lidl â propped up disinformation with ad dollars.
âProcter and Gamble, and Coca Cola, and Lidl, are very likely not aware that they are on these pro-Russian disinformation channels,â Check My Ads CEO Claire Atkin told the European Parliament about the reportâs findings.

As Happy TV continues to appear on televisions across Serbia, CRTA says it will watch for advertisers showing up in unsavory places, funding dark corners of the media world in the process.
âWe continue to monitor the advertising decisions of major brands closely, including Lidl, and aim to influence other significant advertisers, such as Dutch retailer Dehleize and multinational Coca-Cola or P&G, to exercise greater caution and responsibility in their advertising placements,â Nedelijkov said.
âOur goal is to encourage these corporations to consider the broader implications of their financial support, particularly in terms of legitimizing platforms known for disseminating disinformation alongside their advertisements.â
CRTAâs efforts come as ad spending around the world is projected to hit $1 trillion this year â a reality that makes transparency in the advertising ecosystem more important than ever.
The industry, as it stands now, is opaque with almost no oversight and regulation. In fact, when the Incorporated Society of British Advertisers studied the supply chain for programmatic advertising â which is how most ads are bought and sold nowadays â it couldnât track where 3% of the money ended up.
Advertisers need to know where their money is going. Itâs that simple.
