Before you jump into today's email, we want to flag that we understand you may be feeling outrage fatigue. So many draconian laws limiting women's freedoms are being passed across the country. It's exhausting. But at Her Bold Move, we are fired up – and thanks to your support, we have everything we need to keep fighting for women. If you want to help us continue this important work, click here to chip in. [link removed]

We wanted to alert you to a massive issue: A law in Missouri prohibits pregnant women from filing for a divorce – with no exceptions for domestic violence. This is on top of the fact that Missouri has also banned all abortions, with no exceptions for rape or incest.

According to Vanity Fair, this law has been in place since 1973 but is now drawing attention because Missouri State Representative Ashley Aune is fighting back. She recently introduced legislation to overturn this law so women are not forced to stay in unsafe situations and marriages.

We cannot stress this enough: THIS IS WHY WE MUST ELECT MORE WOMEN TO OUR GOVERNMENT.

The states with the most dangerous laws in place are often the same states with the lowest percentage of female representation. We’re working to change that. Help us elect more women like Representative Aune, especially in red states, by rushing $20.24 or more now →

Matthew Huffman, who works for the Missouri Coalition Against Domestic & Sexual Violence, stated that Aune’s legislation could literally save lives: “For abusive partners, they might be using reproductive coercion and control to keep their partner pregnant so that they can’t ever actually be granted a divorce.”

Despite this, Republicans are doubling down on their desire to control women. Missouri State Senator Denny Hoskins (R) said that he is not in favor of letting pregnant women decide what to do with their lives: “Just because the husband and wife are not getting along, or irreconcilable differences, I would not consider that that would be a good reason to get divorced during a pregnancy.”

Here’s the thing: While Missouri is currently in the news, it’s not the only state with this archaic legislation. According to Newsweek, in “Alabama, Delaware, Hawaii, Indiana, Maine, Mississippi, Nebraska, South Dakota, and Wyoming, judges will likely make couples wait until the baby is born before allowing a divorce.”

These sexist, dangerous decisions that affect our bodies, our freedom, and our rights are currently being made by rooms full of men. In fact, Missouri is in the bottom 15% of U.S. states for female representation. At Her Bold Move, we are working tirelessly to get more Democratic women into those rooms to stop these laws from being written in the future – and to change the ones that already exist.

From complete abortion bans to telling women when they can and cannot get a divorce, it couldn’t be more obvious that these laws are meant to control women. Help us elect pro-choice and pro-woman women as they run to replace conservative men who are determined to turn back the clock to the 1950s. Rush $20.24 immediately →
