This Month Across the Midwest
April 2024 Newsletter
On March 8th, the U.S. EPA formally published its new performance standards to limit methane pollution from oil and natural gas sources. Methane has 80 times the warming potential of carbon dioxide in the first 20 years. That makes reducing methane emissions one of the most important steps to reduce climate change in the near term. The U.S. EPA’s methane standards reduce millions of tons of climate-damaging methane and other toxic, smog-forming pollution from oil and gas leaks, venting, and flaring.
Following lawsuits by the oil and gas industries, ELPC joined with ten of the nation’s leading health, environmental and community groups in a motion to intervene last week before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit to defend the U.S. EPA’s protective limits on methane pollution.

CLEAN WATER
ELPC’s latest report, titled "Restoring Pure Michigan: Tackling Livestock Pollution to Protect Clean Water," is a comprehensive analysis explaining how the largest livestock operations pollute Michigan's waters, and what policy actions are needed to fix it. Read here: [link removed]]
SPECIAL PLACES
On behalf of three conservation groups, ELPC secured a preliminary injunction to temporarily prevent the controversial Cardinal-Hickory Creek transmission line from crossing through the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge. Refuges should not become “open for business” for every developer of a gas pipeline, highway, or transmission line.

CLEAN ENERGY
Out with the old and in with the green! ELPC celebrated as the smokestacks came down at the retired Trenton coal plant site near Detroit, Michigan. As part of ELPC’s Power Plants to Parklands (P2P) project, we have been working with DTE and community partners on a new plan for the site, including battery energy storage and a new greenway.

CLEAN TRANSPORTATION
The Biden administration issued new climate and air pollution standards for light-duty, medium-duty, and heavy-duty vehicles. These strong new standards will ensure new car buyers and truck operators in the coming years will have increasingly cleaner choices that will save them money, cut demand for oil, and lead to a safer climate and cleaner air for communities.
