Novotny

*April 5, 2024*

Dear Neighbors,

I hope you had a nice Easter Weekend and were able to spend time with family and friends. It was good to be back home in Elk River while the legislature was on its annual Easter break. We returned to St. Paul on Tuesday for the final 6 weeks of the 2024 legislative session.

As always, I appreciate your support and encourage you to reach out to me if you have any questions, comments, or concerns.

All of us have felt the impact that the soaring costs of everyday essentials have had on family budgets. No matter how you cut it, life is getting more and more expensive.

Property tax relief is one way we can help lessen the burden on Minnesota families, that?s why I have authored legislation that would limit valuation increases for certain homestead properties. In doing so, we can make sure that Minnesotans are not surprised by massive property tax hikes year over year.

More specifically, the bill stipulates that the amount of a property value increase, if any, must not exceed the lesser of 1) three percent of the market value determined in the previous assessment year, or 2) the percentage change from the prior year of the Consumer Price Index (CPI).

You can?read the bill by clicking here [ [link removed] ].

*Unclaimed Property*

Every year, the Department of Commerce receives millions of dollars in unclaimed property from businesses and organizations that have lost contact with the owners. The Department is responsible for safeguarding the funds or property until claimed by the rightful owners or heirs.

People may lose track of their money or financial property because of a change of address, a death, or because they inherited something they didn't know about.

*Staying in Touch*

Make sure to reach out to my office if you plan to be in St. Paul anytime soon. It would be great to meet with you. I can be reached by phone at 651-296-4237 or via email [email protected].

Have a good day,

Paul
