This week at the Capitol presented many opportunities to honor our veterans, both on the House floor and in our committees.

?

*OMNIBUS VETERANS POLICY BILL APPROVED IN HOUSE*

Many of you are aware of the veterans cemetery near Camp Ripley in Little Falls, the first state veterans cemetery in Minnesota. Since then, Minnesota has begun opening more state veterans cemeteries, putting more around the state. These cemeteries ensure those who have honorably served in the armed forces are laid to rest close to their families. The goal is to have the cemeteries located within 2 hours of one another. This also allows family and friends to be close to their loved ones, currently located in Duluth, Little Falls, Redwood Falls, and Preston.

As part of the omnibus veterans policy bill that was overwhelmingly approved in the Minnesota House on Thursday, approval would be given to begin the process of applying for federal funds in order to bring a state?veterans cemetery to Bemidji.

*HONORING AN AMERICAN HERO*

On Monday, April 1, America lost a true American hero. 102-year-old Lou Conter passed away. He was the final survivor of the U.S.S Arizona, the Navy battleship that was sunk during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor early on Sunday morning, December 7, 1941. I asked members to join me on the House floor to help me to honor Conter?s bravery and that of his colleagues. To view my remarks, click on the photo below to watch the video.

*TAX RELIEF FOR VETS ORGANIZATIONS AND NONPROFITS INCLUDED IN SPORTS BETTING BILL*

Legislation that would allow sports betting in Minnesota, to be operated by Minnesota?s Native American tribes, appears to be advancing in the Minnesota House. As part of this plan, charities that lost e-pull tab revenue last year, such as American Legions and VFW?s, would receive tax relief on the proceeds from charitable gambling sales.?

*IMPROVING 55 ALIVE PROGRAM*

For those who aren?t aware, the State of Minnesota allows people who are aged 55 and older to take a driving refresher class which, when completed, qualifies them for a 10% discount on auto insurance premiums. In hopes of enticing more people to take the safe driving class and take advantage of premium reductions, legislation at the Capitol would change the initial requirement from 8 hours of continuing education to 4 hours every three years.
