Fogelman

Hello from the State Capitol,

?

Far too often these days we are seeing legislation that prioritizes the criminals instead of law enforcement. We need to be showing more support for those who put their lives on the line to keep us safe.

?

That?s why I?m supporting a series of public safety initiatives that are being sponsored by House Republicans, to show support for law enforcement statewide and prioritize law and order in Minnesota.

?

One of the initiatives would allow more flexibility in how public safety aid is used by local governments so they can meet their specific needs. Last session, the legislative majority provided $300 million in one-time aid for law enforcement agencies, but did so with restrictions on how the money could be used. For example, tactical vehicles do not qualify, and neither does something as practical as improving lighting to increase safety. Another bill requires county attorneys to disclose information regarding expert witnesses to peace officers in an officer-involved death incident.

?

Action should also be taken on House Republican legislation that would increase the penalty for transferring a firearm to an ineligible person, aka, ?straw man? purchases. As many are aware, an indictment has been filed against someone who allegedly acted as a straw purchaser of the weapons used in the shooting of three first responders in Burnsville.

?

To date, the House majority has refused to move the legislation forward.

*APPLICATIONS NOW OPEN FOR GRANTS TO SUPPORT WILDLIFE HABITAT PROJECTS*

Interested in a wildlife habitat project? If so, I encourage you to apply for $150 million in state grants available to aid Minnesota habitat restoration, protection and enhancement.

?

The Lessard-Sams Outdoor Heritage Council recently issued its annual Call for Funding Request from the Outdoor Heritage Fund. The process is competitive and open to all who wish to apply.

?

The Outdoor Heritage Fund reports, since its creation in 2008, $1.6 billion in on-the-ground habitat programs has been allocated by the Minnesota legislature and over 1.4 million acres of Minnesota forests, prairies and wetlands have been restored, protected and/or enhanced.

?

Proposal requirements and terms of funding are outlined in the Call for Funding Request. To view details or learn more, visit: www.lsohc.mn.gov [ [link removed] ]. For answers to specific questions, contact LSOHC Staff: www.lsohc.mn.gov/staff [ [link removed] ].

?

The LSOHC is composed of eight citizens and four legislators and makes annual recommendations to the Minnesota legislature for funding use. The OHF is one of four funds established as a result of the Clean Water, Land and Legacy Amendment, passed by Minnesota voters in November of 2008. ?
