SNAP HOTLINE IN ACTION

A client recently moved and called the Change Center to report their new address and new utility expenses. However, when our SNAP Hotline Manager completed the SNAP renewal for this client, she realized that these expenses had not actually been added to case, and the client wasn’t receiving all the benefits they were eligible for. We reached out to the County Assistance Office (CAO) to ask for retroactive benefits for the client and to make sure that their expenses got properly added to their case. The CAO fixed the issue, increased the client’s benefits, and sent them over $500 in retroactive benefits for the 3 months since the client had reported the changes.

POLICY & ADVOCACY

Breaking News - SNAP Interviews Waived: In our last email, we reported that starting in April, all SNAP applicants would be required to complete an interview in order to be approved for benefits. We are happy to report that the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services has received approval to waive the interview requirement, for both applications and renewals, until 6/30/24. This means that applicants will not need to complete an interview to receive benefits, and nobody will be denied benefits for failure to have an interview.

Expanded Child Tax Credit: This week, we joined our national anti-hunger partners in a Day of Action calling for the Senate to swiftly pass the Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act.

The Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act includes an expansion of the Child Tax Credit (CTC), which would help low-income families put food on the table and lift as many as 400,000 children out of poverty. Despite bi-partisan House support, this Act has yet to pass the Senate. We urge the Senate not only pass the bill quickly, but also reject any harmful amendments that would weaken the Child Tax Credit provision.

MAKE A STAND AGAINST HUNGER!

We strive to build a community where all people have the food they need to lead healthy lives. Hunger is preventable. Thank you for your continued support of our work!
