Dear NRDC Action Fund Activist,
The MAGA Congress’s assault on endangered wildlife continues.
In addition to adding harmful anti-environment amendments to must-pass legislation and attempting to block or strip protections from individual species, extremist members of Congress have now introduced a new bill, H.R. 7408, that amounts to little more than a blatantly partisan effort to undercut the Endangered Species Act (ESA) and make it harder to protect imperiled wildlife and their habitats.
The ESA is our nation’s most effective wildlife protection law, successfully preventing more than 99% of species under its care from going extinct.
We can’t afford to let extremist MAGA Republicans rewrite that story.
Tell Congress that you strongly oppose any legislation that would undercut the ESA and threaten the recovery of our most vulnerable species.
Among other harmful measures H.R. 7408, would:
- Allow the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to approve contracts for logging projects “without regard to any other provision of the law,” which could result in logging of old growth forests and other sensitive habitats that are home to at-risk species
- Gut critical federal protections for hundreds of threatened and endangered species across the country by putting partisan politics over science
- Claw back over a billion dollars in Inflation Reduction Act funding dedicated to conducting critical environmental reviews for infrastructure projects, manage vital habitat restoration, and meet conservation goals
- Allow states to develop their own recovery plans for species, ignoring science and severely limiting when the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service can designate critical habitat
As the world faces twin climate and biodiversity crises, these protections have never been more essential. They help to preserve functioning, intact ecosystems on which all life — including healthy people — depends.
And with 1 million species worldwide at risk of extinction, many within the next decade, we need to block H.R. 7408 and any other bills that would gut ESA protections and drive imperiled wildlife ever further to the brink.
Please, urge your members of Congress to reject dangerous legislation that threatens the survival of endangered species — and do everything in their power to protect our planet's most vulnerable wildlife.
Thank you for fighting with me.
Sincerely,
Katie Hobbs
