Dear John

There used to be a saying, you wait ages for a bus, and then three come along at once. Yesterday something similar happened with our campaigns.

Jet Fuel Campaign Successes
Almost every day the Burmese military uses airstrikes, bombing schools, hospitals and homes. The result is deaths, injuries and hundreds of thousands of people forced to flee their homes, creating a humanitarian crisis. That’s why we are campaigning for sanctions to stop jet fuel exports to Burma. If the jets can’t fly, they can’t bomb.

Yesterday at a meeting on Burma at the UN Security Council, the USA and Malta called on the Council to take action to stop the supply of jet fuel to the Burmese military. In the two years since we launched the campaign, it is now being discussed in the world’s highest body. Getting the issue onto the agenda is a huge step. Thank you to everyone who has been taking action campaigning for jet fuel sanctions.

Disappointingly, the UK, which leads on Burma at the UN Security Council, didn’t make the call for jet fuel sanctions. If you haven’t emailed the British government about this yet, please do: [link removed]

Also yesterday, there was another success. The United Nations Human Rights Council passed a resolution calling on UN member states not to export, sell or transfer jet fuel to the Burmese military. The resolution does not have legally binding power, but it’s another significant milestone in getting the issue up the international agenda and applying more pressure on countries still involved in the supply of jet fuel to Burma.

Rohingya and Rakhine State Crisis – UN Security Council Meets at Last
Even before the attempted coup began in 2021, Rohingya faced ongoing genocide, with a range of policies and laws designed to make life unbearable for the Rohingya. The highest UN court, the International Court of Justice, has made special orders, called provisional measures, to prevent this ongoing genocide. The military are ignoring them, and now are escalating violence against Rohingya, even forcing Rohingya to join the military and using them as human shields. We wrote to you recently about this, you can read the email here for more information. ([link removed])

Thank you again to those who wrote to David Cameron calling on him to convene a meeting on this crisis. Your advocacy helped make this happen.

At Burma Campaign UK we welcome the British government calling this meeting, but we have to say we were disappointed they didn’t go further in specifically calling on the Burmese military to abide by the provisional measures ordered by the UN court. If the Burmese military think they can keep getting away with violating international law, they’ll keep doing it.

Campaigning for practical action against the Burmese military can be frustratingly slow, but yesterday we took some steps forward. This only happened because you are part of a network of campaigners keeping the pressure on governments and MPs. We can keep making progress with your continued support.

Thank you for your support.
