Memphis-Midsouth DSA

Hello comrade,

This email aims to communicate four things, to:

  • Remind you about our next General Meeting at 6pm on Tuesday, April 9th at RP Tracks (agenda here).
  • Report to our members on the outcome of our Informal Meeting on Thursday March 28th.
  • Share some notes and photos from the Trans Day of Visibility, where our members joined in and supported a march in Cooper Young.
  • Share a link so our members can watch Memphis City Council meetings.

GENERAL MEETING

The Memphis-Midsouth DSA's next General Meeting is on April 9th at 6pm at RP Tracks.

Please attend if you can. General Meetings for our chapter are a chance to vote and otherwise conduct business. Here is our full agenda for Tuesday's meeting.

They tend to follow a rather structured agenda, focused around the passing of resolutions and motions. They are also a chance for us to elect or appoint new officers. Members and guests are welcome, but only members can vote.

This meeting will among other things deal with amendments to, and voting on, one motion and one resolution:

  • A Motion to Create an Ad Hoc Committee for the Purpose of Passing Legislation during Memphis’ Election Timeframe
  • A Resolution to Create and Sustain a Workplace Organizing Committee as a Part of the Memphis-Midsouth Local Chapter of Democratic Socialists of America

If you want to offer a motion or resolution to receive a first reading at the April 9th meeting please email the Steering Committee at your earliest convenience.

REPORTS

Informal Meeting on 3-28

Our informal meeting was well attended, with a diversity of long-time members, interested guests, and new members present. We discussed the two above resolutions. The full agenda for this meeting is available here. Edits from feedback during the Informal Meeting are not yet included in the above documents, but they will be before our General Meeting on April 9th.

Informal Meetings for our chapter are not for deciding business through voting. They are opportunities to deliberate about our politics as well as our organizing in a less structured way.

Trans Day of Visibility

A number of our members attended the Love and Trans Pride March that ended at the Out Memphis office on Cooper in Memphis on March 31st. Trans and other LGBTQ marchers spoke over a megaphone, sharing touching experiences and sentiments with the some 50 attendees.

We walked together beneath the trans flag on this important day of action.

One speaker cried out, "When we fight, WE WIN!" to an applauding crowd.

And, one of our recent members also made buttons for our members to wear at the march!

MEMPHIS CITY COUNCIL

Here is a link so you can read over City Council agendas and watch their proceedings. Our Steering Committee wants to encourage our members and Memphians generally to supervise those elected to rule in this city.
