Here in Maine, $67 million was spent by a Canadian government-owned energy utility to defeat a single ballot measure. It’s wrong, and it’s got to stop.
Look, we know that gaps in our campaign finance system have been exploited by foreign entities trying to influence the outcome of a single congressional race, local ballot initiative, or state issue referendum. The national security risk is unacceptable, but we can solve it.
Congressman Golden’s bill will prohibit any direct contributions from foreign nationals and ensure foreign countries, agents, and corporations cannot influence voters in ways that serve against their own interests but harm Americans and their families.
