Today is National School Librarian Day, and with a recent report showing that Florida had the most books challenged for removal from classrooms in 2023, our librarians deserve a shout out more than ever.
According to the American Library Association, almost 50% of the books challenged for removal dealt with LGBTQ+ topics or were written by BIPOC authors.
This politically-motivated censorship is harmful to our students and places additional burdens and pressures on our school librarians in a time of already severe school personnel shortages.
If we want to get back to letting our students focus on learning and our educators focus on educating, we need to break the GOP supermajority in Tallahassee.
As a college professor myself, I will always stand up for our educators and our librarians. And as a longtime advocate for equality and LGBTQ rights, ending the harmful censorship and attacks on LGBTQ+ and BIPOC students is a fight I will never back down from.
I’m ready to bring back balance to Tallahassee and bring the focus back to bipartisan solutions on the real issues, like the insurance crisis, the cost of groceries, climate change, fixing the teacher shortage, and so much more.
Thank you,
Joe
