Hi John, it’s New York City Comptroller Brad Lander.

If you’re reading this email, you may already know the answer to this. But one question I hear a lot is, What does the Comptroller do?

As Comptroller, I am New York City’s Chief Financial Officer. One of three independently elected city-wide officials, I safeguard the City’s fiscal health, root out waste and fraud in City government, and ensure that City agencies are working effectively so they can serve the needs of all New Yorkers.

I take great pride in leading the Office of the Comptroller — from overseeing public pension funds for 800,000 current and future City retirees, to issuing the municipal bonds that fund our infrastructure. Week in and week out, our 700+ staff across 12 bureaus work tirelessly to enhance City operations — providing sharp-eyed budget and contracts oversight, auditing City agencies, settling claims, enforcing labor laws, and more.

We use these tools to address the toughest issues facing New Yorkers: Our Contracts & Audits team have detailed mismanagement in emergency procurement, and outlined how we can provide the services that help asylum-seekers get on their feet more cost-effectively. Our Policy team has researched smarter ways to help homeless, mentally-ill New Yorkers off the street before they cause harm to themselves or others. Meanwhile, our Responsible Investing team makes sure our pension investments advance worker rights, affordable housing, and the transition to clean energy.

Our work impacts real New Yorkers every day. But to truly understand the city, I really want to hear directly from you!

That's why I'm reaching out today to ask: What keeps you up at night? [[link removed]]

Please take a moment to complete our brief survey and let me and my team know which issues in New York City concern you the most. As Comptroller, there's nothing more motivating than hearing directly from New Yorkers about their thoughts on the city we all love.

SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS [[link removed]]

Our city faces many challenges — challenges I’ve been striving to solve after a dozen years as a City Council Member, and now as Comptroller. You may not be able to list every issue on your mind. However, if you could share the top three issues you believe require immediate attention, I would greatly appreciate it.

I’m eager to hear your thoughts on what matters most to you right now as a New Yorker. And now hopefully you know what the Comptroller does :-)

In solidarity,

Brad
