It’s Decision Time for Europe’s Jews

ADL Director of European Affairs Andrew Srulevitch writes a powerful essay about Jewish lives in France. This is the first in an ADL series about Jewish life around the world post-10/7.

My friend, Marc, lives in a medium-sized city in France with a medium-sized Jewish community. He considers himself a “medium” Jew. He wears a Star of David necklace, but not a kippah. On Friday nights, his family gathers for Shabbat dinner and lights candles, but they watch TV afterwards...

After October 7, Marc is no longer just a “medium” Jew. Now he’s a “stop-and-think” Jew. Marc stops and thinks about the article his friend recently sent. In December, the leaders of the Belgian Jewish community wrote an op-ed in a major Brussels paper where they stated the choice for Europe’s Jews after October 7 was “between emigrating to Israel, a country without antisemitism but at war, or remaining in countries at peace but increasingly more hostile to Jews.”...

It is decision time for Marc. If he no longer stops to think, but decides to leave, that will signal the beginning of the end of mainstream Jewish life in Europe. The “medium” Jews like Marc make up the majority of those who affiliate with Jewish communities in Europe and sustain their institutions.

Many European leaders have said that Europe will not be Europe without its Jews. Now is the time for European governments to take decisive action against antisemitism to avoid that fate. … Europe’s leaders need to stop and think, because after October 7, it’s decision time for Europe’s Jews.

MAKING GOOD PROGRESS THIS WEEK

Boxes of signed letters are delivered to the White House. (Credit: OU)

More than 180,000 letters were hand-delivered to the White House yesterday that urged President Biden to continue to work to secure the release of the hostages held by Hamas, combat antisemitism and reaffirm support for Israel. Thank you to the thousands of ADL supporters and everyone else who used their voice during the ‘180,000 Letters for 180 Days in Captivity’ campaign, and to the Orthodox Union for leading this action.

An Important Budget Bump: Amidst historic rising antisemitism, the new Federal government budget increased funding for the Office of the Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Antisemitism by 17%. ADL led the charge to increase funding for the Office, which is in line with the National Strategy to Counter Antisemitism. This increase in funding will help the Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Antisemitism, Ambassador Deborah Lipstadt, and her team to continue to address the alarming spike in global antisemitism, advance opportunities to engage with international partners and make clear to the world the United States’ steadfast commitment to combating antisemitism.

Daniel Haqiqatjou: What You Need to Know: Daniel Haqiqatjou is an antisemite and conspiracy theorist who also spreads anti-LGBTQ+ and misogynistic rhetoric. A new backgrounder from the ADL Center on Extremism digs into his work at the Muslim Skeptic, an online magazine that frequently elevates antisemitic tropes and conspiracy theories. He regularly engages in debates about religion with Muslim and non-Muslim figures and is occasionally invited to speak on campuses and in mosques in the U.S. and around the world.

Demand Your Senators Take Action on Sexual Violence Against 10/7 Victims. The attack by Hamas marked the deadliest day in Jewish history since the Holocaust, with documented widespread rape and sexual violence against Israeli women and girls. These atrocities were met with global silence, justification, and flat-out denial until Jewish activists started demanding recognition and condemnation. Join ADL in urging your U.S. Senator to support a bipartisan resolution to formally recognize and condemn the use of sexual violence on October 7th.

New survey from our partners @HillelIntl: 64% of Jewish students are not applying to certain colleges because of a rise in antisemitism on campus. These findings should be a wake-up call that university administrators must do more to make their students feel safe. #NotOnMyCampus.

The game industry must invest more to make online games free from hate and harassment. As ADL’s @danieljkelley said, “On the other side of every screen is a human being with feelings and experiences, and the choices people make in online spaces have real offline consequences.”

As I told @brikeilarcnn, in this polarized political moment, extremists are feeling emboldened, and it’s led to an unprecedented rise in white supremacist and antisemitic propaganda. It’s going to take a whole-of-society approach for us to combat the spread of this hate.

Appalled by reports of vicious antisemitic harassment outside a political fundraiser in NYC last week. The video footage that has emerged, including of profanity-laden personal attacks and chants of “Al-Qassam are on their way”, are deeply disturbing and must be condemned.

Shameful & incendiary language used by SJP (University of Illinois-Chicago chapter) protesting outside a Chabad House against the presence of an IDF soldier speaking with students. This isn’t about fostering peace or support for the Palestinian people. It’s about intimidation & harassment.

Last week, members of a self-proclaimed anti-racist Facebook group for therapists published a list of “Zionist” (code for Jews) therapists. The group called on its members to not refer patients to the “Zionists” on the list. This is bigoted, unethical, and clear antisemitism.
