On Monday, it was announced that the Florida Supreme Court issued a ruling that effectively banned abortion after six weeks of pregnancy – before most women know they are pregnant. As a result, a state that many people in the South depended on for access now has one of the most restrictive abortion laws in the nation. This ban is set to go into effect on May 1.

However, that ban is not the end of this story: The Florida Supreme Court also ruled that a proposed constitutional amendment, which would guarantee the right to abortion, can appear on the statewide Florida ballot in November, giving voters a chance to restore access fully.

We have good news and bad news, John xxxxxx.

The bad news: Yesterday, it was announced that the Florida Supreme Court ruled that “the State Constitution’s privacy protections do not extend to abortion,” effectively banning abortion after six weeks of pregnancy – before most women know they are pregnant.

As stated by The New York Times, “In paving the way for the six-week ban, the court cemented the rapid transformation of Florida, once a destination for women seeking abortions in the American South, into a place with restrictive policies akin to those in surrounding states.”

Florida’s new abortion ban will go into effect on May 1st.

But here’s the good news: The Florida Supreme Court also ruled that a proposed constitutional amendment, which would guarantee the right to an abortion, can appear on the ballot in November.

This is our chance, John xxxxxx: In November, our partners will need 60% of the vote to secure a passage of this amendment. This is a make-or-break moment for Florida. This vote gives the power back to the VOTERS instead of anti-choice lawmakers and judges.

We are an official partner organization working with the Florida Women's Freedom Coalition. This committee has been raising the necessary dollars to (successfully!) fund the petition drive and is now working to fund voter outreach efforts + the legal fees associated with defending the amendment against the Florida GOP. We know Floridians want to protect the right to full reproductive healthcare, not restrict it.
