John,
In the upcoming special election to replace Rep. Ken Buck, who resigned late last month, the field is now set.
Republicans chose a placeholder candidate named Greg Lopez, who ran unsuccessfully for Governor in both 2018 and 2022. Democrats nominated a political newcomer named Trisha Calvarese, a former congressional staffer who also worked in communications for Conservation International and for the AFL-CIO.
Lopez has a lot of unique baggage weighing him down: in 2020, he settled a lawsuit with the DOJ after he allegedly tried to influence the Small Business Administration after a stint as district director of the SBA. He also has a documented series of run-ins with law enforcement, including a domestic violence incident while his wife was six months pregnant in 1993, and a DUI charge. (According to the Denver Post, Lopez admitted having been charged, but couldn't recall exactly when...)
