Changing real estate agent fees will help all buyers and sellers—but some more than others
After multiple class-action lawsuits nationwide alleging anticompetitive practices, the National Association of Realtors has agreed to pay more than $400 million in damages and rewrite its current agent commission fee rules.

Starting in July, the settlement requires that compensation for real estate brokers cannot be listed on multiple listing services and that buyer-side real estate agents have to “enter into written agreements with their buyers.” How will this change work in practice?

Researchers predict that sellers will continue to pay buyers’ agents’ fees out of sales proceeds, real estate fees will go down, and affordability challenges will remain.
