As of February 2024, the European Union’s (EU) Digital Services Act (DSA) is fully implemented. The DSA is a landmark law for platform responsibility, poised to help foster a more democratic online experience. It could transform how we understand and address the harms that online platforms exacerbate, including disinformation and harassment.
Because of the outsized impact that EU regulation has globally, the act’s transparency measures can help civil society, policymakers, and tech companies across the world chart a path toward a more rights-centered and democratic online experience.

NGOs Petition UN to Rule Moroccan Activist’s Detention as Arbitrary
Freedom House joined other organizations to petition the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (WGAD) on behalf of Nasser Zefzafi, an imprisoned political activist in Morocco. Zefzafi is serving an unjust 20-year prison sentence for his peaceful activism on behalf of his indigenous Amazigh community in the marginalized Rif region.
