Dear friend,
We hope you and your family are keeping well during this time of crisis. I’m emailing to let you know about how we are adapting at Jubilee Debt Campaign, as well as an update on our campaigns.
In line with government advice all our staff are working from home and applying social distancing measures. We would encourage everyone to do the same. We have also cancelled our public events and we’re moving a lot of our campaigning online.
The impact of the coronavirus outbreak on debt both at home and abroad could be enormous, so we’re pushing hard to make sure there is a just response.
Global south debt
The economic turmoil caused by coronavirus is pushing indebted countries deeper into crisis. Many of you added your name to the petition to the Chancellor calling for debt cancellation and everyday more countries are speaking out about debt. Together we need to keep campaigning so that the global south is not forgotten amidst all the upheaval caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
Debt in the UK
There is a huge risk that more people fall into a debt trap because of the outbreak. Today our letter calling for a £10 billion debt write-off was signed by almost 80 other organisations and academics, and was published in the Financial Times. You can read more about the impact of coronavirus on debt in the UK in our blog.
Keeping you informed
We will be running a series of webinars on coronavirus and debt. We’ll be holding these on Zoom so you will be able to attend via your smartphone or computer. You can get ready for these by downloading Zoom now, get in touch if you need support with this.
You can also hear our Head of Policy Tim Jones speaking as part of a webinar on Thursday 9 April at 6.30pm, hosted by our friends at Global Justice Now. Click here to register.
Reaching us
Our office is currently closed. We’re still responding to queries via email and social media, but we cannot send material requests at this time. If you need anything or have any questions please email us at [email protected].
Keep an eye out for our updates in the coming weeks to find out what we have in store. In the meantime, please stay safe and follow government health and travel advice.
In solidarity,
Sarah-Jayne Clifton
