Hey y'all,
Every spring I reflect on what I'm working with that needs space, acknowledgement and release. It’s an opportunity to take inventory on what’s alive in me, what’s driving my behavior and what's in the way of my growth.
This year, it’s anger and rage.
Now I believe rage is a valid and acceptable response to systems that are designed to harm most of us. How can we not be furious at the state of the world, the complicity of our governments, the apathy of our friends, the endless suffering of so many?
My rage is power. It is evidence that I am wide awake, heart broken open to this moment in the world.
But emotions are also meant to be in motion, not to stand still or stay stuck. Moving emotions means allowing ourselves to fully feel into them, to understand them more clearly and to direct and transmute them into powerful action.
Here’s a framework I've been working with as a part of my own practice of detox and recovery:
1️⃣ ACKNOWLEDGE: Feelings want to be felt and validated. By paying attention to our feelings we learn to work with them vs be run by them.
2️⃣ CHALLENGE: Investigating why we feel a particular way, where that pattern might come from, what deeper need is underneath is helpful in understanding and navigating our patterns.
3️⃣ TRANSFORM: From this place we can more skillfully channel our feelings and transmute them into more generative power.
