In partnership with New Pride Agenda < [link removed] > and the Trans Prisoners’ Rights Coalition < [link removed] > , the GIRDS Day of Action Lobby Day on April 9 is an opportunity for advocates to speak directly with key legislators in Albany about the importance of passing GIRDS this session.

The Gender Identity Respect, Dignity, and Safety Act would require state and local correctional facilities to house trans, gender nonconforming, and nonbinary (TGNCNB) people consistently with their gender identities and ensures that correctional officers and staff address people by their correct names and pronouns. It also guarantees access to commissary items, clothing, and other materials that are consistent with gender identities.

*This event is open to all, and training will be provided so folks are equipped to have compelling conversations with lawmakers. Transportation and food will also be provided.

Last week, The Center and community partners celebrated our 8th Annual Community Iftar. Co-founded in 2017 by The Center and leaders of Caribbean Equality Project, Tarab NYC, SALGA NYC, and Muslim Alliance for Sexual and Gender Diversity, and the Commission on Human Rights, the event provides a safe and brave space for queer LGBTQ+ Muslims and allies to break fast during Ramadan.

This year, more than 140 attended the event, making it the most successful Iftar yet!

The Center recently had the opportunity to raise the profile of LGBTQ+ and BIPOC issues at the New York State Association of Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic and Asian Legislative’s 53rd Annual Legislative Conference in Albany.

The evening's reception with Dr. Carla Smith, CEO of The Center, and our honorees was inspiring, made possible by partnerships with In Our Own Voices, The NEW Pride Agenda, Equality New York, Caribbean Equality Project, and Queer Inclusivity Social.
