Just in time for tax day, the U.S. Internal Revenue Service has launched a pilot of its new Direct File resource. Available to families in Arizona, California, Florida, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Nevada, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming, the pilot will help the IRS decide whether to expand the service nationwide. According to our partners at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP), using Direct File could save families more than $150 and 9 hours every year. Thanks to CBPP for sharing this important news, as well as some sample outreach materials (in English and Spanish) partners can use to help spread the word and make the pilot a success. And for people who do not have a Social Security number, consider sharing PIF’s Individual Taxpayer ID Number (ITIN) toolkit.
