John –
Enough is enough. We have to efficiently utilize every program we have to address our city’s homelessness crisis.
SF Examiner: SF homelessness program now a mayoral battleground
If you haven’t heard, last week I revived a city program that pays for travel assistance to help unhoused individuals get back home to their loved ones. The Board of Supervisors supported the measure, and it will:
-
Add the Homeward Bound initiative to the City’s Administrative Code, making it an official program.
-
Establish clear criteria for eligibility and oversight through mandated reporting.
-
Expand the program to people in permanent supportive housing and those in city-run shelters, not just people living on the streets.
In the program's first years under former Mayor Gavin Newsom, we reunited 11,000 people with their families, but in the past few years, we’ve barely assisted 300 individuals a year.
It is hard to fathom that we weren't engaging families and individuals in our shelters, but now we can allow them to return to their hometowns and supportive networks. The current administration almost let this program die under layers of bureaucracy. We need a leader in the mayor’s office who will provide real solutions for our homelessness crisis.
That’s why I’m asking for your support. Will you join me by donating to my grassroots campaign?
Sincerely,
Ahsha Safaí
Candidate for Mayor of San Francisco
