Arlington Regional Transit workers vote overwhelmingly to join ATU Local 689

ATU Local 689 is pleased to welcome Arlington Regional Transit (ART) workers after 99% of workers voted in favor of being represented by the union in a vote held March 22. The workers are employed by Transdev, who is currently contracted to operate the system for the county.

Maryland General Assembly passes HB 260, supervisors' collective bargaining bill

Last week the Maryland General Assembly passed HB 260, a bill which would allow over 4,000 supervisors employed by the State to collectively bargain. "Our hardworking women and men who choose a career in state service deserve to have a seat at the table when their pay and working conditions are discussed," said Delegate Mark Chang (District 32), in a statement. The Senate version of this bill passed earlier with a vote of 35-10, and it will now go to the governor for signature. More »

 

Laurel City mayor hires union-busting law firm for first contract negotiations with DPW workers

Last year, workers of Laurel's Department of Public Works (DPW) won union representation with UFCW Local 1994 MCGEO. As workers begin contract negotiations for the first time, Laurel City Mayor Keith Sydnor has hired union-avoidance law firm Jackson Lewis P.C. to conduct negotiations.

"They have been on the wrong side of workers' rights and progress at every turn, and it's despicable that Mayor Sydnor would hire them on behalf of Laurel's citizens to suppress the rights of its DPW workers," said Gino Renne, president of UFCW Local 1994.

 

Support Starbucks workers at Shipley's Grant this Saturday

In March, employees at another Starbucks in Ellicott City voted to unionize. "With so many issues surrounding our store, and the strengthening of the movement to unionize, we found it in our best interest to file at this time,” said Noah Smith, a shift supervisor and union organizer at the store. This Saturday from 3-5 PM, come cheer on Shipley's Grant Starbucks workers ahead of their union election.
