North Carolina League of Conservation Voters
Hi John,
I want to introduce myself! I’m Khalilah Karim. A lot of you may not know me, but I’ve been with NCLCV for over 5 years. In those 5 years, I worked as the Raleigh Director of Power Up, one of our programs committed to meaningful community engagement. Through my work, PowerUp partnered with community gardens, HBCUs–such as Shaw University–and other community groups. With these ties we fought to break food deserts in SE Raleigh, helped push democratic involvement through candidate forums, and helped people find their voice to push back on legislation and legislators that didn't serve them.
Not only have I done the organizing, but I have seen the effect it has on people and their communities.
As much as I love that work, I think it is really important for that type of work to be funded. I have moved to my new position as co-director of development to continue this work. My experience gives me a unique advantage of how I talk about the work we do.
Now I want to share those insights so we can continue to build a greener, cleaner world for everybody! One of those insights is the importance of knowing how politicians are performing on environmental issues. We just released our scorecard. It’s definitely something you want to check out. Then, come celebrate with me at the 2024 Green Tie Awards–where we will highlight important environmental work being done in environmental politics.
I want to thank you for your dedication to the environment in NC! Your advocacy and generosity make a difference.
Looking forward to working with you to protect our environment.
Khalilah Karim, Co-Director of Development and Donor Relations
