John, nothing prepared me for the hollow feeling I woke up with on Nov. 9, 2016 – the day after Donald Trump was elected. 

At the time, I was working in President Obama's administration, and I couldn't believe our country had made so much progress, only to elect someone who wanted to take us backward.

I couldn't help but question if I could have done more – if we all could have done more to stop Donald Trump from becoming president. 

I didn't know it that day, but Trump's election and the dangerous direction he and his far-right supporters took our country in would be one of the reasons I decided to run for Congress.

I couldn't stand what was happening, and I had to do whatever I could to change it. Turns out, a lot of people felt the same way I did – and that's how we defeated a 22-year GOP incumbent, elected me as TX-32’s first ever Democratic congressman, and won back the House for Democrats in 2018.

My motivation remains the same in this race. For over a decade, I've watched Ted Cruz fail Texans time and again. I know I can do better, and I know Texans are ready for change.

And just last month, I officially became the Democratic nominee to take on Ted Cruz in November. But this race is going to come down to a handful of votes, and Ted Cruz has special interests and mega donors lining his pockets to crush our grassroots movement. He's got over $6.5 MILLION in the bank, and I've got to hit my critical deadlines just to keep up.

I know I don't want to wake up the day after Election Day on Nov. 6 wishing we had done more to defeat Ted Cruz, John.
