Since the overturning of Roe v. Wade, national abortion funds have led the fight in ensuring that Americans can access the reproductive care that they need. Despite a boom in philanthropic giving to abortion funds in the year after the Dobbs decision, funds across the country are struggling to meet the increasing demand as the issue fades from the headlines and state legislatures continue to introduce draconian laws.
Abortion funds in the South, where access to abortion and other forms of reproductive care have become increasingly limited, have been hit the hardest. Funds in states like Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, and Georgia have seen major philanthropic organizations pull funding while they continue to find ways to connect folks seeking abortions to out of state care. To meet the growing demands of their communities, funds across the South need consistent, long-term investment from foundations, individuals, and organizations dedicated to moving money for reproductive care.
