Speech fasting: would staying silent until midday make us happier and healthier? Yeah, I’m struggling here. Fine, there may be other reasons why you should spend some of the day in silence. A piece in Psychology Today last year suggested that not only does silence help us become better listeners, but it can also help us empathise with those who cannot speak, such as babies.
And I assume that people will like you more if you aren’t constantly yammering away at them. Well, maybe not. That used to be the case, with the book How to Make Friends and Influence People advocating forging relationships by asking lots of questions of other people instead of just talking about yourself.

WorkWorkEditor's Note: Other East Asian countries such as Japan are also searching for funds to care for large numbers of elderly. But Japan was already wealthy by the time it had one of the world\'s largest ageing populations.

WorkEditor's Note: Many European governments are making it easier for younger women to enter the workforce with increasingly strong maternity and childcare support programmes. The need is more urgent than it is in North America, where the population isn\'t ageing as fast. WorkEditor's Note: Crucially, they\'ve also turned the comments off - a trend emerging out of the corporate world, social media analysts note.

WorkThe Guardian view on the IDF's killing of aid workers: a grim milestone in Gaza | Editorial Even by the standards of a conflict that has killed almost 33,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, and created the entirely human-made famine taking hold in Gaza, Israel has crossed multiple lines in just a couple of days. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) killed seven foreign aid workers, including a dual US/Canadian citizen, three Britons as well as team members from Poland and Australia, and their Palestinian driver, as they attempted to meet some portion of the desperate need. Gaza's chief hospital, al-Shifa, lies in ruins after a two-week IDF raid. Israel says no civilians died there; the World Health Organization disagrees. And it has killed the Revolutionary Guards Corps commander Mohammad Reza Zahedi and his deputy at an Iranian diplomatic mission in Syria - reviving fears of a wider regional conflagration, and setting a dangerous precedent in targeting diplomatic premises. Editor's Note: The World Central Kitchen workers were in clearly marked cars, in a "deconflicted" zone, heading away from an aid warehouse, having coordinated movements with the IDF. The convoy was struck not once but three times, killing the fleeing survivors. WorkRay Dalio explains why he is still investing in China Ray Dalio, chief investment officer at Bridgewater Associates, took to LinkedIn on Tuesday to defend his continued investments in China â a market he views as crucial to "understand the world" and for "diversification." Editor's Note: "The time to buy is when everyone hates the market and it\'s cheap ... especially when it looks increasingly likely that the economic leadership is about to do something" Dalio said.

WorkTrump Again Invokes ‘Blood Bath’ and Dehumanizes Migrants in Border Remarks Mr. Trump’s campaign appears to be trying to turn “blood bath” into a catchphrase, essentially trolling his critics and shifting the focus to Mr. Biden. On Tuesday, the Republican National Committee, which the Trump campaign now effectively controls, introduced a website, BidenBloodbath.com, that mirrors Mr. Trump’s argument that Mr. Biden is responsible for an “invasion” at the United States’ border with Mexico. The site highlights a number of violent crimes in which undocumented immigrants have been accused. WorkU.S. Finalizes Rule Requiring Two-Person Crews on Freight Trains “F.R.A. is doubling down on an unfounded and unnecessary regulation that has no proven connection to rail safety,” said Ian Jefferies, the chief executive of the Association of American Railroads. “Instead of prioritizing data-backed solutions to build a safer future for rail, F.R.A. is looking to the past and upending the collective bargaining process.”

WorkBernie Sanders to Benjamin Netanyahu: 'Stop murdering innocent people' "No matter what, it's going to be a difficult election and I'm going to do everything that I can, despite my disagreement with the president over what's going on in Gaza, to make sure that Donald Trump is not elected president of the United States. That would be a horrific disaster for our country. WorkWorkWorkWorkThe Caitlin Clark Show Rolls On The early rematch of last year’s national championship game ended fittingly, with the ball in Clark’s hands as she dribbled out the final seconds of Iowa’s 94-87 regional final victory over L.S.U. that was covered, as usual, in her fingerprints. WorkWorkWith Abortion on the Ballot, Trump Says He’ll Address the Issue ‘Next Week’ Representatives of the Trump campaign did not immediately respond to questions about the abortion announcement and where that would fit into Mr. Trump’s campaign schedule. The former president has often promised policy plans — for example on infrastructure or health care — that are either delayed or never delivered. WorkBiden Administration Presses Congress on $18 Billion Sale of F-15 Jets to Israel With a top speed of nearly 2,000 miles per hour, the F-15 is capable of both air-to-air combat and bombing targets on the ground. While Israel has used the F-15s it already owns to strike Gaza, its request for the planes appears to reflect longer-term concern about regional threats, including from Lebanon-based Hezbollah, Iran-backed militias in Syria, and Iran itself. The Israel Defense Forces would probably employ F-15s in any potential attack on Iran’s nuclear program. WorkWorkWorkWorkWorkWorkWorkSevere Weather Sweeps Through Ohio Valley, Damaging Homes About 228,000 customers lost power, with the majority of those outages in West Virginia, where more than 124,000 customers were without electricity, according to Poweroutage.us.
