Big banks often take advantage of people working for low wages and struggling to pay their bills with high overdraft fees or predatory payday loans that punish people for lack of wealth. Twenty-two percent of adults in the U.S. are unbanked or underbanked, forcing them to rely on expensive check cashers.
There’s a solution: Offer basic banking at post offices nationwide. Families struggling to make ends meet would gain access to traditional banking services at their local post office, instead of being forced to use check cashiers and other predatory services.
Additionally, postal banking would strengthen the U.S. Postal Service’s bottom line by generating additional revenue each year, contributing to the overall finances of the USPS.
Sign the petition for this win-win: Immediately reintroduce and pass postal banking legislation.

P.S. Below is an email we sent out earlier calling on Congress to reintroduce postal banking legislation:

The U.S. Postal Service is a beloved American institution. But under the current leadership of Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, it continues to struggle–including revenue losses amid DeJoy’s disastrous 10-year plan.
Congress and President Biden must immediately focus on ways to support the USPS and the communities it serves. One service that could not only strengthen the USPS and generate new revenue, but also serve individuals underserved by private institutions, is postal banking.

Postal banking is simply the provision of financial services via the USPS. By allowing consumers to open a bank account at their post office, postal banking could help over 7 million American households that are unbanked—meaning they lack access to a checking account or basic financial services. Postal banking could also take aim at predatory practices–like high-fee prepaid debit cards and overdraft fees–that have taken advantage of unbanked and underbanked Americans and could offer small-dollar loans that could eliminate the market for predatory payday loans.
We must demand Congress reintroduce postal banking legislation, like the Postal Banking Act, and support not only the USPS but also underserved communities across the country.
Sign the petition to Congress: Immediately reintroduce and pass postal banking legislation.
