PUBLIC HEALTH | in the spotlight
With public health at the forefront of many of our minds today, here is an opportunity to view a recent Institute panel discussion that focuses on this exact issue. State and local leaders discussed public health issues facing communities across Massachusetts, including gun safety, substance abuse, mental health, the social determinants of health, and even the responsibility of community members to vaccinate themselves to protect those who cannot. Watch here.

Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, director for the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and key member on the White House Coronavirus Task Force, has served as advisor to six presidents on HIV/AIDS and many other domestic and global health issues. In 2007, he contributed his perspectives to the Edward M. Kennedy Oral History Project, specifically focusing on his work with Senator Kennedy in addressing the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Read the interview here.
CENSUS | be counted
The Institute is proudly partnering with our closest neighbors – the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum and the Massachusetts State Archives & Commonwealth Museum – to build awareness of the importance of the Census. Completing the Census is vital and has a lasting impact on every community in United States. And for the first time in our nation’s history, it’s something you can do online by going to 2020census.govTake this important civic action today.

Help us spread the word by encouraging your family members and friends to participate in the Census, too. You and they will help shape how $675 billion of federal funds are distributed and how many seats each state has in the House of Representatives. Everyone matters. Be counted.

CIVICS at HOME | online resources
Give the young people in your life the opportunity to discover the importance of a diverse and representative democracy through the Institute’s A Seat at the Table Lesson Plan. This collaborative project is a companion to the Institute’s exhibit which featured a selection of chairs created by community participants.

Download the lesson plan and guide your learners in creating a physical representation of "a seat at the table" for themselves, their class, and their community. Inspired by Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm’s famous words and life story, the lesson plan invites us to think about why diversity of representation is vital.

You might be familiar with terms like "executive order" and "filibuster," but would you know how to explain them to someone else? Here are some short animations about what those and other important government-related terms mean. Watch here.
Digital Highlights
The Institute’s video library on YouTube features an array of recordings of our most popular public programs, special tributes to Senator Edward M. Kennedy’s work on important issues, and behind-the-scenes views into our youth civic engagement work and partnerships with congressional centers across the nation.

On topics domestic and international, there is a Flickr album for many of the Institute’s public programs and events. See photos of elected officials, public figures, and other notable visitors.

Whether it was dynamic events or unique trips for student-senators at the Institute, a lot occurred last year. Explore our 2019 year in review celebrating our programs and other accomplishments.
