John,

If you’re wondering what the future may look like for LGBTQ+ Americans under another two years of a Republican-controlled Congress, look no further than Idaho.

Idaho Gov. Brad Little has signed into law SB 1352, which gives mental health professionals the right to refuse care to patients based on their personal values and religious beliefs.

John, what is the point?

Counselors and therapists already have a right to refer patients to another care provider, for any reason. This law serves no purpose but to stigmatize and shame queer and trans Idahoans who are actively seeking support.

Unfortunately, this isn’t the only discriminatory law that the Idaho legislature wants to send to the governor’s desk.

Four other extreme GOP bills would:

  • change the legal definition of “gender” and require birth certificates to list “sex at birth” instead

  • end government funding for facilities that provide gender-affirming care and restrict Medicaid coverage for transgender patients (regardless of age)

  • force schools to out trans and non-binary students to their parents, and…

  • ban books from public schools and libraries for including references to LGBTQ+ people on the grounds that we constitute “obscene material” simply by existing.

We already know that Republicans are testing their most extreme laws in state houses across the country.

If we give Democrats the House majority this year, we can pass legislation to override these attacks BEFORE they bring them to Congress.

I will fight everyday in Congress to protect my community, women, and American families. Will you help me win this election for ID-02’s House seat and end the GOP attacks on the people we love – and people like me?

The last time I looked at the ACLU’s anti-LGBTQ+ data, they were tracking 402 discriminatory bills across the country. John, that was in February. That number has jumped to 484 bills now.

Now more than ever, gay and transgender Americans need increased representation in Congress.

We need more leaders who can empathize with our struggles and who will protect our right to the same safety and opportunities offered to everyone else.

I will stop at nothing in Congress to be that leader. The hard part is getting there, but I know I can make it happen this year with your support.

David Roth is a single, gay dad running for Idaho’s Second Congressional District. We’re going up against a GOP incumbent who has been in this seat for 25 years. It’s time for change in Idaho, and our grassroots campaign is building on the momentum that began in David’s race for U.S. Senate last cycle. The GOP is not planning to defend this seat, so we plan to take it from them and help Democrats retake the House majority next year. We’d love your support to build a solid campaign to bring progress to Idaho and the country.
