Dear John,

Last week, after 5 ½ hours of in-person testimony before the U.S. House Judiciary Committee, As You Sow’s CEO Andrew Behar was interviewed
live on Democracy Now!

This week – Wednesday, April 3 at 5:30 Pacific – Andy defends ESG and sustainable investing at a live debate hosted by the University of Arizona.

The Democracy Now! introduction was spot-on:

“Andrew Behar says his group is being investigated by the House Judiciary Committee as part of an orchestrated Republican crackdown on socially responsible investing... Republicans currently have introduced 145 bills in 27 states making it illegal to work with banks and asset managers that use environmental, social, and governance, or ESG, policies, in their investment practices…"

Conservative political operatives see ESG as a threat to the market transition away from fossil fuels and want to prevent investors from taking financial risks like climate change into consideration.

ESG is simply a framework for assessing and addressing material risk for businesspeople and investors, including risks like extreme weather disruptions to supply chains, shortages arising from climate change impacts on growing raw commodities, and diversity in the workforce.
