Every year in Spring, an army of #LitterHeroes takes to our streets, parks, beaches, school playgrounds (and more!) to protect their local environment from litter.
This year, as Keep Britain Tidy celebrates its 70th anniversary, hundreds of thousands of #LitterHeroes showed that the environment belongs to everyone by gathering in their communities and public spaces, and pledging to pick more than 426,626 bags of litter that would have otherwise remained in our beautiful outdoors, posing a threat to wildlife and marine life too.

We've been so inspired by your unwavering commitment to protecting the environment that Keep Britain Tidy has introduced the Great British Spring Clean Awards - the Golden Globes of the litter-fighting community (one might even call them the Green Globes!) - to officially recognise and reward our volunteers.

COMPETITIVE LITTER-PICKING SPORT SPOGOMI IS TRENDING AFTER UK VICTORY
The British gold medal winners of the SpoGomi World Cup – the new litter-picking sport – have been supporting the Great British Spring Clean and are hoping the sport will catch on in the litter-picking community!
Global litter-pick champions Dr Sarah Parry, her partner Alex Winship and his brother Jonathan Winship brought home gold for Britain in last year's tournament in Tokyo and are hoping their success will inspire a new generation of sporty and competitive litter-pickers.
Their team – christened The North Will Rise Again – beat more than 20 countries to scoop gold by picking 57.78kg of rubbish in 20 minutes!
SpoGomi is an amalgamation of ‘Sport’ and ‘Gomi’ which is Japanese for rubbish and after being developed in 2008 in Japan its popularity has spiralled globally as people compete to pick the most rubbish.
Thanks to inspiring athletes like Sarah, Alex and Jonathan, we can show that litter-picking is not only good for the environment but great for our health – and fun to take part in!
