School is in session! [Take our quick quiz now]
John,
Did you know that when temperatures soar above 90 degrees, asphalt can
turn into a heat trap, causing third-degree burns? This is
because asphalt absorbs a whopping 90 percent of solar radiation.
When schoolyards lack pavement and shade, they leave
students exposed to extreme heat and the injuries that can come with
it.
Our Community Schoolyards projects address this issue head-on,
prioritizing shade plants and other design elements that can reduce
extreme heat. Can you guess how much of a difference green design can
make?
How much cooler can plant-shaded spaces be compared to unshaded
asphalt surfaces on a hot day?
5 degrees
15 degrees
20 degrees
30 degrees

No child should suffer injuries or heat stroke from playing on
scorching hot asphalt schoolyards during recess. Sadly, this is the
reality for many students across the country as 1 in 3 kids attend
schools in heat islands. With climate change exacerbating extreme
heat, it's crucial we take action now.
That's why we're transforming these dangerous asphalt schoolyards into
vibrant outdoor classrooms, filled with trees, gardens, and play
structures. Community Schoolyards spaces provide vital resources to
schools, empowering them to create safe, engaging outdoor learning
spaces that connect children with nature and benefit everyone in
surrounding communities.
Together, we're giving children the enriching, nature-filled education
they deserve. Thank you for learning more about this important issue
and supporting us as we transform playgrounds from asphalt to amazing!
