Learn About Upcoming Projects At Peninsula State Park
?
MADISON, Wis. ? The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) invites the public to learn more about upcoming trail projects at Peninsula State Park in Door County.
The Northern Lake Michigan Coastal Master Plan, publicly reviewed and approved in 2018 by the Natural Resources Board, authorizes several improvements to the trails at Peninsula State Park to improve trail sustainability and visitor experience.
Located on the west side of the Door Peninsula near Fish Creek, the 3,800-acre?Peninsula State Park is one of Wisconsin?s most popular state park destinations, offering a wide variety of year-round outdoor recreation opportunities. Eagle Tower is one of the park?s most popular attractions.
Upcoming changes include the construction of segments of accessible trail, the removal of unsustainable trails within wetlands and the addition of mountain bike trail.
The mountain bike trail will consist of an 18-48-inch-wide tread that meanders through the property, utilizing desirable topography to minimize soil displacement while avoiding ecologically sensitive areas.
Starting now through May 2, 2024, the DNR welcomes questions about the project. Inquiries can be sent to Eric Hyde, Peninsula State Park Superintendent, at [email protected].
As part of the public information period, an in-person open house will be held on April 16, 2024, from 4-7 p.m. at the Gibraltar Town Hall. Attendees can review maps and other displays and discuss trail updates with DNR staff.
Trails maps and additional information about the planned projects are also available on the Peninsula State Park webpage.
